    James Monroe (April 28, 1758 – July 4, 1831); president (1817 – 1825). The country of Liberia, Africa has the capital named Monrovia (in 1824) in honor of President Monroe.

    James Monroe, fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825 who made the Monroe Doctrine, and who established the city Monrovia, in Liberia. He felt that he should right the wrong that had been done to the Africans and sought to move them back to Africa. His plans didn’t work as well as he wanted, for some African Americans thought that he was moving them back to America because he was racist and was tired of seeing the African Americans. So despite his good intentions, most African Americans did not move to Monrovia, but those who did created a fairly nice city with advanced (back then) technology and economy.
