• Why was France at war with Austria, Prussia, Great Britain and Spain? Were they trying to halt the spread of revolutionary ideals?

other monarchies did not want democratic ideas to spread to their countries so they tried to put down the democrats in the nation

  • this year will be my senior year of high school and i want to celebrate my graduation by backpacking across europe for the entire summer next year. a trip like this obviously takes major planning (and cash) and i’m just looking for a good place to start my planning. my head is already spinning with possibilities. i want to see as much as possible but theres so much to do.

The thing that is great about Europe is all the trains that connect from major city to major city, so i would look at that as my get to from place to place.

First off, i would narrow it down to the main cities you HAVE to see. So pick a few, maybe Paris, Rome, Madrid, Brussels, Amsterdam, and then figure out how you’re going to get from place to place. And while going from place to place you can see all the places inbetween them, like going from Brussels to Amsterdam, pick some places to stop off.

yess, it seems very confusing, but the main point is narrow down the places you have to see, then start thinking of how to get from place to place and where you are going to stay.

  • I’m curious. Every country has its issues with class (America certainly does), but it just seems like it has more influence in English society. I’ve heard some pretty interesting instances in which one’s class is put at the center of attention. Sorry if I’m generalizing, I’m just interested in knowing more about the significance of socioeconomic status in England.

Very. There is huge class segregation. The working classes stick together and rarely mix with the upper classes. Although England is part of a Socialist state, and you are provided with a home a job money etc. the chances are unless you are born into the right background and are intelligent you will stay in the lower class (thankfully standards of living in the UK are some of the best in the world). The fortunate upper classes are lucky, and they will only slide down a class if their fortune becomes exhausted.

  • I am planning a trip to France and Germany. Given their proximity, I’d like fly into Paris but check out smaller cities as we make our way from Paris into larger cities in Germany. Basically, I’m asking advice for places to stay along the way, be they charming, unique, have fantastic food, have an unbelieveable hotel or restaurant, anything. By the way, I’m 30. I like my vacations to be a mix of culture and pure relaxation.

I lived in Western Germany for 5 years. In France drive from Paris to Dijon, France…then to Strasbourg, France…then your like 5 minutes away from Germany…go to Triberg, Germany…and then the rest is up to you!! It’s a really fun trip…soak it all in! :)

  • My professor today mentioned that most European countries have universal healthcare. This means that everyones healthcare is provided by the state, correct? How much more money do people pay in taxes in Europe than in the U.S.? It would have to be more since their healthcare is covered, right?

I am English and now live in California. Like most people I thought that there was a huge tax burden in Britain, but after coming here I now think that’s not the case.We pay two forms of tax from our wages:Income tax and National insurance. Your income tax is tax like everywhere else, national insurance pays for your pension and healthcare. I have lived in England all my life up till now and I will fiercely defend our healthcare system, the NHS (national health service). In thanks largely to the effort of our heroic doctors and nurses (and all other staff) the NHS survives….the healthcare is nothing like as bad as people make out, and there are no long waiting lists anymore (now if you’re waiting more than six months for routine surgery they’ll send you abroad to have it done, paid for of course). No-one pays anything for medical care and the one reason it’s under stress (As a healthcare proffesional I know this from experience) is the fact that something built as a national health service is used as a world health service. People come to the UK from all over Europe to take advantage of the NHS and from all over the world. I would like to see treatment restricted to citizens/people who have paid at least 5 years national insurance contributions but at the same time I would never ever want to see anyone, citizen or not, turned away or denied medical care because of money. I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford health insurance in the US but the amount hospitals/doctors charge is disgusting and I don’t really understand why people are so opposed to universal health care, can you really put a price on life?
By the way income tax is 20% of anything you earn over about 5 and a half thouse pounds ($11k) and national insurance is 11% of anything you earn over 84pounds a week ($160) And people have the option of private healthcare in england too if they want to pay for it

  • Saturday November 17 –
If the Russia team defeats Israel, it would qualify for the Euro 2008 and the England team would be eliminated, despite their match against Croatia on Wednesday November 21 …
How come the England team gets that far, not even have their destiny handy, while their league is one of the three greatest in the World?

TIME TO NATURALISE MORE TALENTED PEOPLE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO PLAY FOR ENGLAND. ONLY WAY ENGLAND CAN SOLVE THE DEARTH OF TALENT IT IS NOW FACING, THANKS OF COURSE TO CLUBS THAT BY PASS ENGLISH TALENTS.

  • What would they eat typically in France for breakfast, lunch and dinner? And what are some of their staple foods?

For breakfast they may have coffee and French bread or some type of pastries for lunch maybe seafood, pasta and a glass of wine. Dinner probably some lamb dish or chicken with a bottle of wine.

  • I want to sail to Europe instead of flying, but I don’t want to take a cruise. I want to sail across the Atlantic, be dropped off and spend awhile in Europe and then sail back across the Atlantic. I don’t want to stay on a ship and have them show me Europe. Does anyone know of a company who provides ships that cross the Atlantic?

Go by cargo ship. Check out the link.

  • My daughter lives in France and has recently received a cheque in Sterling. She cannot pay it into her bank. Is there anyway she could endorse it and send it to me so that I could pay it into my bank for her when she eventually visits me?

You should be able to cash a sterling check in France at a bank at which she has an account, all be it at a cost. It would also take time. If the bank is refusing then she needs to insist. If she sends the cheque back to the sender would they transfer the money to a designated bank by a BACCS transfer? I had this done in France when my money was stolen when on holiday. It cost me and took about 5 days for the transfer to be completed.
