• Can someone please explain what a labor union is, and the benefits of being part of one, as well as the following question: How are labor unions important in the USA today?
I am writing a paper for a college scholarship, and I just need some info, anything would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

I suggest you google this issue or go to a library. However, it has been labor unions that ruined the auto, steel and paper industries in the United States. They have also ruined themselves except for those that are in the service industries like the SWEA union which can’t move as they service service industries here in the United States. We lost our auto and steel industries to foreign countries where unions are not allowed and the labor is controlled by their government and their government controlled wage scales (China, India, Japan etc.). They got so greedy that they drove the industries that were supporting them out of this country. This is one reason General Motors and Chrysler failed and our country is in bad shape economically. The other reasons are our stupid economic policies, manipulation of foreign currencies by China and Japan, and our governments not putting tariffs on imports like the Chinese and Japanese do to protect their industries..

  • What is the difference between a Major and a Minor? How many majors and how many Minors must we take? When do we declare a Major and what does that mean? What is Double Degree? Major and minors can come from any disciplines, yes?

    Etc, etc.

I’m planning to pursue education in USA, but I am confused with the undergraduate system.

Yes, a "major" can be any discipline like Math, History, Economics, Chemistry, etc. In order to successfully be eligible for graduation in the US you need to complete a certain amount of classes related to your major. The requirements vary from college to college. For example, my university (Columbia) requires two courses in Math, one in Statistics, and nine in Economics in order for me to graduate with a degree in Economics. This does not include the unrelated "liberal arts" classes (literature, arts, music) I must take in addition to my Economics major.

A "minor" represents other interests you have besides your major, but it does not require as many classes as a major. Think of it as a mini-major (a minor!).

When you "double major" you are basically taking on a second major (major is described above).

All colleges require a "major" as the minimum requirement to graduate. But you do not have to declare a minor or a double-major. Those are optional, for more ambitious students.

  • I am just wondering if any wireless router purchased in North America will work in Europe? I admit that I don’t know much about how a router works – lol.

    Thanks!

There’s no reason why not. A router picks up its WAN side address from your DSL gateway or cable modem. It assigns IP addresses on the LAN side to the systems on your local network. The only real differences you’ll encounter will be in the power settings. Get an adapter to change from the voltage used in Europe to the U.S. 110V standard, or you’ll burn the router’s circuitry up.

  • We obtained recently our Canadian citizenship through the resident permanent procedure, however our first child, who was born with spina bifida and is handicapped, remained in our country of origin. We have never declared him in front of the Canada immigration, since he has always lived in a government medical centre for children with special needs. Now, after communicating with several lawyers, we realized that we violated the Canada immigration law.
We would greatly appreciate any advise of how we could possibly bring him to Canada.

the only possible way to do this is if you do it through H&C.

you must also provide information about how you can support your son’s illness when he arrives here and build a case around the fact that he needs to be with you.

And perhaps bring orphans from other countries to have a better life. It may seem quite unreasonable, but I’m devoted to starting an orphanage. Thanks in advance for any useful information that anyone can give me.

  • I am looking for a place or organization in Canada that accepts pop tops (pull tabs) from aluminum cans, such as pop or beer. I have been saving them for a while and wanted somewhere to donate, by either mail or dropping them off. I reside near Hamilton, so are there any local organizations i can do this? and or any where in canada i could mail them? thanks!!

You could try checking with a local service club, such as the Lions, Rotary, etc. Some of them collect the tabs to sell as scrap aluminum (the Lions throughout Alberta do, but I’m not sure about the rest of the country.)

  • These countries produce goods much much cheaper than in USA.
Will it be possible to keep paying high us $ salaries to workers in USA compared to other developing countries ???

Modern economy is not only about manufacturing, but also about services and intellectual property.

When you pay $10 for a T-shirt, $2 goes to China for making the shirt, $3 goes to GAP that designed the shirt, and $5 goes to the shop for its employee salaries, rent, and transportation costs.

Food is was mostly grown in US due to trade barriers and farmer subsidies (little dirty secret of our free-market economy). On top of that, half the food we consume comes from restaurants or fast food, so it is processed in US.

Rent and housing money obviously goes to US sources.

And then come services. Cell phones, Internet, Cable, Movies and DVDs, iTunes, videogames, are all US-made.

So the bottom line is that China might be making material stuff, but it’s the intangible goods that matter, and US is way ahead in those.
