Download an application or get one from the Post Office (assuming you’re in the US). Fill it out, and send it in with the fee and a picture or two of you to get one.

They work by acting as a secure form of ID to identify you and your citizenship when you cross a border. They are also stamped to show what countries you’re allowed to visit – IE, who has given you a visa to allow that visit.

Find a place near you, using the link provided. This link also lists all the requirements needed to get a passport. Allow yourself plenty of time, the sooner you apply, the better! Good luck and have fun in New Zealand!

You should check out the web site below for details.

You need to apply in person at a passport acceptance facility. There are more than 9000 of these, and many are at major passports. When you show up you must have

    1. A filled out application
    2. Proof of US Citizenship – usually an original copy of your birth certificate, but there are other things you can use.
    3. Proof of identity – usually a government issued photo id, like your drivers’ license. there are other options, here too.
    4. Two passport photos
    5. The fees, currently a total of $100 for an adult.

It will take up to 6 weeks to get your passport, though they are usually a little quicker.

When you travel internationally you will need to have your passport with you when you check in to your flight (most airlines will check your passport, because if you get sent back they may have to bear the cost of your return travel)) Then you will pass through immigration on your way into the other country. You’ll fill out a form, and go past some kind of person who will ask you questions, then let you through. It’s relatively painless.

New Zealand does not require a visa, so that is not an issue.
